National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) is a Ukrainian national research university in Kyiv. The school's forerunner, the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, was founded in 1615. The NaUKMA is located on the grounds of the Academy in the historic Podil district. It was reorganized in 1991, and classes began the following year. According to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, NaUKMA has the highest level of accreditation and is one of the thirteen educational institutions in Ukraine with the status of a research and autonomous university. The European University Association, for example, is one of the many international university collaborations in which NaUKMA participates. The university offers instruction in both Ukrainian and English. It is one of the few universities in Ukraine that offers internationally recognized degrees.

NaUKMA is one of Ukraine's smaller universities, with roughly 4000 students. In the 17th and 18th centuries, alumni of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy played an important part in the intellectual and religious life of Ukraine and Russia. Hetman Ivan Mazepa and philosopher Hryhori Skovoroda were two of the most prominent alumni. In addition, as rector of the Kyiv-Mogila Academy, Theophan Prokopovich expounded on and implemented Peter the Great's Russian Orthodox Church reform. The university is recognized for being pro-Western and for serving as a base of operations for Orange Revolution participants.
