Pee-Wee's Big Adventure
Tim Burton made his feature picture directing debut with the 1985 American adventure comedy Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Paul Reubens, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Phil Hartman, Michael Varhol, E.G. Daily, Mark Holton, Diane Salinger, and Judd Omen, plays Pee-wee Herman in the film. It relates the tale of Pee-extensive wee's hunt for his stolen bicycle and is referred to as a "parody" or "farce adaptation" of the 1948 Italian classic Bicycle Thieves.
When Reubens was hired by the Warner Bros. movie company following the success of The Pee-wee Herman Show, he started drafting the script for Pee-Big wee's Adventure. The producers and Reubens recruited Burton to direct after being pleased with his work on the short films Vincent and Frankenweenie. California and Texas was the location for the filming.
On August 9, 1985, the movie opened, earning over $40 million in North America. It gained cult status and received a steady stream of favorable reviews. In addition to two sequels, Big Top Pee-wee (1988) and Pee-Big wee's Holiday, it was nominated for a Young Artist Award (2016). Warner Bros. hired Burton to helm Batman in 1989 as a result of its commercial success, which was followed by Beetlejuice's commercial success in 1988.
