The Mitchells vs the Machines
Sony Pictures Animation will release the science fiction comedy The Mitchells vs. the Machines in 2021. The movie was produced by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Kurt Albrecht, and it was directed by Mike Rianda (in his feature directing debut), co-directed by Jeff Rowe, and written by Rianda and Rowe. The dysfunctional Mitchell family, who must travel across the country to defend Earth from a robot uprising, is the focus of the movie. Abbi Jacobson, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Rianda, Eric André, Olivia Colman, Fred Armisen, Beck Bennett, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Blake Griffin, Conan O'Brien, and Doug the Pug all lend their voices to the animated film.
Sony Pictures Releasing had originally intended to show the movie in theaters under the name Connected in 2020, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic's effects on movie theater attendance, Sony decided to sell the main distribution rights to Netflix. On April 23, 2021, it was released in a few theaters by Netflix with the revised title The Mitchells vs. the Machines, which Rianda and Rowe had originally preferred. A week later, on April 30, it was made available for streaming. The animation, voice acting, action sequences, themes, humor, and LGBT representation in the movie won praise from critics. At the 94th Academy Awards, the movie was nominated for Best Animated Feature but lost to Encanto.
