Sahlgrenska University Hospital

Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU) provides emergency and basic treatment to the 700,000 people who live in the Gothenburg region, as well as highly specialized care to the 1.7 million people who live in West Sweden. SU is also the country's leading provider of specialized care, particularly in the field of pediatrics (paediatric heart surgery, incubator care for premature babies, as well as treatment in paediatric endocrinology). SU is also noted for its effective transplant program, cardio-vascular disease treatment, immunology (research into rejection processes), and vaccine development.

Three hospitals combined to form SU in 1997: Molndal Hospital, Sahlgrenska Hospital, and Eastern Hospital. Sahlgrenska University Hospital has been a part of the Vastra Gotaland Region since 1999.

In Sweden, there are six teaching hospitals that provide medical education. In collaboration with the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, the hospital provides the essential infrastructure for teaching and research.
