Stephen the Great Central Park

Stephen the Great Park is a major attraction in Moldova's capital, Chisinau. It is Moldova's oldest park, founded in 1818 by an engineer from the Russian Imperial Army. This park draws a great number of tourists every day, particularly those who want to go for a stroll and take in the scenery.

Along the park's border, there are seven entrances. Two marble lions stand watch at one of the park's gates. Their past is a classic central park mystery. There are only rumors that they belonged to a manor home, but after it was destroyed during WWII, the monuments were transported and erected in the Public Garden. The monument to the Russian poet Pushkin was unveiled in the Public Garden in 1885, and it is now regarded the town's oldest intact bust.

The park has over 50 varieties of plants and trees, some of which are nearly 200 years old, including a gigantic acacia. Originally, the lane had 12 bronze busts of classic figures mounted on polished red granite poles. The Avenue of Classics now houses 29 busts of notable people, as well as a variety of cultural events. The monument to Stephen the Great and Holy is one of the park's most outstanding works.
