Time to Pretend
The lead single from the American indie band MGMT's debut studio album, Oracular Spectacular (2007), Time to Pretend, was made available on March 3, 2008. Their Time to Pretend EP contained an earlier version. The B-sides "Weekend Wars" (BBC Radio 1 Session) and "Metanoia" were included on the single's 7" and CD versions, respectively. The song was re-released in the UK at the beginning of 2009. On Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time," the song was listed at number 493, while its parent album, Oracular Spectacular, was ranked at number 494 on a separate list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". On NME's list of the 500 greatest songs ever, the song came in at number 90.
The Holy Mountain, a 1973 movie directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Lord of the Flies, a 1954 book, are both mentioned in the song's music video. Ray Tintori was the director of the video. The video received a score of 10 out of 10 from Tiscali Music. The video was also produced in 3D with a few small alterations from the original.
