The University of Nairobi is a Nairobi-based collegiate research university. It is Kenya's largest university. Despite the fact that it began as a school in 1956, it was not until 1970 that it became an independent university. The university has 61,912 students in the 2011 academic year, with 49,488 undergraduates and 12,424 postgraduates. To meet Kenya's growing demand for higher education, the institution established multiple regulatory frameworks and introduced self-funded enrollment. Today, the university is in 1st of the best universities in Kenya.

For a long time, the University of Nairobi served as Kenya's only institution of higher learning, developing and evolving strong, diversified academic programs and specializations in sciences, applied sciences, technology, humanities, social sciences, and the arts in response to the country's, region's, and Africa's high-level manpower training needs. To date, there are roughly 200 different programs available. Hundreds of Kenyans and non-Kenyans have been given an invaluable opportunity to access university education through module II (continuing education) programs, which are offered on a fee-for-service basis to those who meet university admission requirements but have been unable to do so due to the government's limited resource allocation. Kenyatta University is a public research university with 13 campuses spread across the country. Kenyatta University Main Campus, the largest university location, is located in Nairobi County, some 20 kilometers outside of Nairobi. A bus service runs from here to the city center, with a one-hour journey time. Kenyatta University has a huge student body, with over 70,000 students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programs taught by about 1,500 academics. After Kenya gained independence from British administration in 1970, the university was renamed Kenyatta College. In 1985, it was granted university status and called Kenyatta University. Mwai Kibaki and a number of other previous Kenyan presidents and vice presidents are among the university's illustrious alumni. Today, Kenyatta University is one of the best universities in Kenya.

Kenyatta University offers a diverse range of English-taught courses organized into 18 schools, including humanities and social sciences, public health, architecture, engineering and technology, medicine, and a school of creative film and media studies. A new school for security, diplomacy, and peace studies launched in 2018. Kenyatta University also has a large online learning program: the Digital School of Virtual and Open Learning, which teaches through online videos and other resources, is claimed to have over 10,000 students enrolled.

Students can participate in a wide range of activities, from scrabble and chess to karate and taekwondo, as part of the university's competitive and social culture. Two swimming pools, a gym, five football fields, dozens of racketball courts, and two sports and track fields are available at Kenyatta University.

Strathmore University is a Nairobi-based chartered university. Strathmore College was founded in 1961 by a group of professionals who formed a charity educational trust as the first multi-racial, multi-religious advanced-level sixth form college teaching science and arts topics (now the Strathmore Educational Trust). The founder of Opus Dei, Saint Josemara Escrivá, inspired and encouraged them to build the college. Strathmore has a particularly effective accounting program: in the ten years from 2007, it has produced 60 percent of Kenya's CPA finalists. Professor John Odhiambo is the current Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Strathmore University Foundation is a not-for-profit organization incorporated under Kenyan law as a limited-by-guarantee business with no share capital. Strathmore University owns it totally and it is solely focused to earning revenue to assist university programs. The foundation is governed by a board of directors made up of well-respected members of society. The University Council and the University Management Board suggest this board for appointment.

The United States International Institution - Africa, sometimes known as USIU Africa, is a private university based in Nairobi, Kenya's capital city. It was founded as the Nairobi Campus of United States International University in 1969. Under its current name, it was formed as a distinct university in 1999.

The university offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral courses in a wide range of subjects through its five major schools: The Chandaria School of Business, The School of Science and Technology, The School of Humanities and Social Sciences, The School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and The School of Graduate Studies, Research and Extension.

The United States International Institution - Africa is a diverse academic institution that hosts students from 130 countries and has a wide range of research partnerships with leading institutions across the world.

Some initiatives at the university includes the Global Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship (GAME) and the Development Partnerships in Higher Education (DELPHE). The university has partnerships with a number of global organization, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The institution has a vast campus in the Roysambu neighborhood that contains cafeterias, playgrounds, sports facilities, libraries, and research centers, among other things. There are numerous student clubs and organizations, as well as assistance for disabled students. Through its Student Employment Office, the school also assists students who are looking for work.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology is a public university in Juja, 36 kilometers northeast of Nairobi, off Exit 15 of the Nairobi-Thika SuperHighway. Technology, Engineering, Science, Commerce, Management, and Building Sciences are among the courses available. Biotechnology and engineering are two areas in which the institution is particularly interested in conducting research. Dr. Paul Chepkwony, the first Governor of Kenya's Kericho County and a former lecturer, Emma Miloyo, a prominent Kenyan architect and the first female President of the Architectural Association of Kenya, and Aden Duale, the former Leader of Majority in Kenya's 11th Parliament, are among the notable alumni.

Some students are eligible for subsidized housing provided by the university. Within the school grounds, there are six student hostels, three of which are occupied by males and three by females. Males occupy Halls 3, 5, and 6, while girls occupy Halls 1, 2, and 4. The Candle in the Wind, Main Mess, and Hall Six dining mess are the three student dining cafeterias. In the dining mess, the food is subsidized. Breakfast is offered from 6.30 to 8 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dinner from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology features a library with a seating capacity of 600 students and a collection of 80,000 books. Online services, reference, inter library loan, user education, orientation, online information services, photocopying, binding, and repair are all available at the library.

Egerton University is a Kenyan state university. It is Kenya's oldest higher education institution. The university's main campus is in Njoro, a tiny settlement about 25 kilometers (16 miles) southwest of the town of Nakuru. This town is about 182 kilometers (113 miles) northwest of Nairobi, Kenya's capital and largest city, by car.

Egerton Farm School was the initial name of the school, which opened in 1939. Maurice Egerton, 4th Baron Egerton of Tatton, gave a significant land grant of 740 acres (3 km2) to establish it. The school was founded with the intention of preparing white European adolescents for jobs in agriculture. The name was changed to Egerton Agricultural College in 1955. Agriculture courses included a one-year certificate and a two-year diploma. Lord Egerton gave an additional 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) of property in 1958. Soon after, the college welcomed students of all races from Kenya and other African nations. With help from the Kenyan government and USAID, the college expanded once more in 1979, joining the University of Nairobi system. Now a day, Egerton University is one of the best universities in Kenya.

Moi University is a public university in Kenya's former Rift Valley Province, located in Kesses, Eldoret town, Uasin Gishu county. Following the McKay Commission's recommendations, the Moi University Act of the Kenyan Parliament was passed in 1984. Professor Miriam Were is the current chancellor of the university, and Professor Isaac Sanga Kosgey is the vice-chancellor.

Main Campus, Town Campus, Eldoret West Campus, and Odera Akang'o Campus are the University's four campuses. The College of Health Sciences (Medical Complex), School of Aerospace Sciences (Rivatex), and School of Law (Annex) are located on the Town campus, while Privately Sponsored Students Programs are located on the Eldoret West Campus (PSSP). Moi University has two component colleges, Garissa and Rongo, which provide unique undergraduate and postgraduate programs, as well as six satellite campuses in Nairobi, Kitale, Alupe, Kericho, Coast (Mombasa), and Nakuru.

The university has had no official mascot since its inception. However, in early 2017, students from the School of Engineering chose the Nandi bear as their mascot, as well as the university's mascot, pending agreement from other schools. It was given the temporary name "Kerit the Bear" because of its legendary reputation among the Nandi people (the institution was founded in Kesses, which was largely settled by the Nandi).

The main campus of Mount Kenya University is in Thika, with satellite campuses in Nairobi, Parklands, Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nkubu, Meru, Kakamega, and Kisii. Malindi, Kisumu, Nyeri, and Kericho have study centers, while Garissa, Isiolo, and Kitale have marketing offices.

The University has three institutes namely: Institute of Security, Equip Africa Institute, Justice and Ethics and Institute of Films, Performing and Creative Arts, one College and 13 schools namely: Medical School; Public Health; Nursing; Pharmacy; Clinical Medicine; Law; Applied Sciences and Pure; Engineering Energy and Built Environment; Computing and Informatics; Hospitality, Education; Travel and Tourism Management; Social Sciences and School of Business and Economics.

MKU programs are accredited by the following professional bodies in addition to the Commission for University Education: Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB); Kenya Nutritionists & Dieticians Institute (KNDI); Clinical Officers Council (COC); Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (KMPDB); Public Health Officers and Technicians Council (PHOTC); Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK); Commission for Legal Education (CLE); and Kenya Medical Laboratory Technologist and Tecnologist (KMLTTB).

Mount Kenya University has a Management Board (MB), which is in charge of implementing university policy and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the university. In accordance with the University Charter, the MKU Senate is in responsibility of all academic concerns. The University is accredited to ISO 9001:2015 and is a member of the Inter-University Council for East Africa, the African Association of Universities, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

MKU has successfully formed partnerships with like-minded higher education institutions all around the world. On a local, regional, and international level, the University now has approximately 50 collaborations and links.

Like most other universities, the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) began modestly. It began as the Catholic Higher Institute of Eastern Africa, a graduate theological institution (CHIEA). Pope John Paul II formally launched CHIEA on August 18, 1985. The Graduate School of Theology began talks with Kenya's Commission for Higher Education in 1986 with the goal of establishing the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

The Institute received the "Letter of Interim Authority" in 1989, which was the first step toward becoming a private university. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences was founded after three years of extensive talks between the Authority of the Graduate School of Theology (CHIEA) and the Commission for Higher Education. On November 3, 1992, the Civil Charter was granted to CHIEA, bringing the talks to a close. This was the first time the university was established as a private institution. The Faculties of Science and Commerce were founded in 2002. The Center for Social Justice and Ethics was founded in 2003.

In honor of one of the university's founding fathers, Maurice Cardinal Michael Otunga, the university maintains the Cardinal Otunga Scholarship Fund. The fund's goal is to help underprivileged, but deserving students continue their education at the university. The Fund Steering Committee and the Scholarship Awards Committee are the two groups that make up the scholarship fund governance system. The Steering Committee plans the annual Cardinal Otunga Memorial Mass, the Lecture, and the Scholarship Fundraiser, while the Awards Committee oversees the distribution of cash to worthy students.

The Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) was established through the elevation of The Kenya Polytechnic University College (KPUC) to full university status. According to the planned Universities Act of 2012, TU-K was formed as Kenya's first technical university. In Kenya, the technical university is a new form of institution whose mission is to provide higher education and research in the field of technology. The technical university as a concept is being developed in Kenya with the goal of becoming a technological driving force behind the Vision-2030 initiative and the country's overall economic development. This stems from the realization that most countries that have been able to achieve big technological breakthroughs have had their technology universities propel them forward.

The Technical University of Kenya will provide undergraduate degrees at the Bachelor's level as a higher education institution. In this regard, it should be noted that, in terms of technical personnel education at the university level, Kenyan institutions of higher learning have consistently focused on the training of engineers, architects, surveyors, planners, and estate managers over the years.
