The University of Antananarivo (French: Université d'Antananarivo) is Madagascar's main public university, located in the capital Antananarivo.
The University of Antananarivo was founded on December 16, 1955, with the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Antananarivo. It became the country's primary seat of higher education and was renamed the University of Madagascar in 1961. It eventually developed five more branches in Antsiranana, Fianarantsoa, Toamasina, Toliara, and Mahajanga.

The University of Toliara is considered one of the best universities in Madagacar. It is the oldest of the decentralized higher education facilities established in 1971 when the University of Madagascar was dismantled. In 1977, it was designated as a Regional University Center (CUR), and in 1988, it was granted university status. Since then, it has grown into its own university.
It consists of four Faculties, an Institute, and a Grande Ecole: the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences, the Faculty of Law, Economics, Management, and Sociology, the Faculty of Medicine, the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, and the Ecole Normale Supérieure. The University Campus of Maninday, located 5 kilometers east of Toliara, houses the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences, and the Ecole Normale Supérieure.
The University of Toliara also expands its international clout through bilateral collaborations with a variety of universities, both French and English-speaking, as well as internationally famous research centers. The University of Mahajanga is a public higher education school in Mahajanga, a port city on Madagascar's northwest coast. It is also one of the best universities in Madagascar.
The CUR, or Mahajanga Regional University Center, was founded in 1977 with only one course: the School of Dental Surgery (ESCD). In 1982, two courses were established: Natural Sciences and Medicine, and the CUR was directed by Professor Andrianjatovo Raharisoa Jeannette from 1977 to 1978, then by Doctor George Raoelina in 1978, and finally by Professor Rajabo at the start of 1988.
Each of Madagascar's six CURs was elevated to the status of autonomous and independent university on October 7, 1988.
