  1. Piano, who named her business after her mother Mon, has added a menu of southern Thai flavors, street-style decor, and an indie music to Vienna's booming Southeast-Asian culinary scene. On warm nights, lone diners take up a stool at the enormous communal table or window seats indoors, while a youthful, joyful crowd pours out into the courtyard.

Piano's plump tod mun (fish cakes; €6.50) are among the best outside of – or in – Thailand, and her herb-strewn papaya salad (€7.50), full-frontal pig larb (€8), and delicious sticky-rice accompanying have cult status. There's a long list of other snacky appetizers, curries, and stir-fries to choose from, but the daily curry and rice (€7.50 to €8.50) is hard to beat, as Mamamon frequently uses fresh, seasonal ingredients while remaining completely authentic (note that it's always fish on Fridays, but it often sells out by lunch).

  2. Heinz Reitbauer is the chef de cuisine of this two-starred Michelin restaurant in the lush Stadtpark, which is charmingly housed in a former dairy building from the 20th century. His tasting menus are an exuberant feast, bursting with natural, fundamental flavors befitting a chef of high standards. An extra €79/89 (six/seven courses) is charged for wine matching.

Seasons play a big part, but you could start with young beets and wild lettuce with chia and eucalyptus, then move on to milk-fed veal with melon, aubergine, and sorrel. Keep an eye out for the famous cheese trolley and scrumptious treats like milk and hay with raspberries. Reservations are required because the service is consistently excellent.

  3. T.O.M. R, in the village of St Andrä im Sausal, 20 kilometers north of Leutschach, has long been a popular dining destination in southern Styria. Tom Riederer and Katarina run their business out of a former rectory, which has been transformed into a light, attractive fine-dining establishment with a few upper rooms for overnight stays. Riederer's cooking is precise and highly visual, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting, as it should be in Styria.

This is a leisurely event, so plan on coming around 7 p.m. for dinner, 12.30 p.m. for lunch, or 11 a.m. for Sunday brunch. If you're a vegetarian, vegan, or have allergies or food intolerances, let them know ahead of time and they'll be pleased to accommodate you.

  4. This former schoolhouse turned restaurant is Tyrolean through and through, perched on a scenic ridge above Zell am Ziller. The larch-wood interior is bathed in honeyed light, the patio takes advantage of the views deep into the valley and beyond, and the short menu reflects a family that values local sourcing and farm-fresh ingredients.

The Geisler family knows their suppliers by name, and their food changes with the seasons - in the summer, garden salads, herbs, and trout from nearby brooks, and in the fall, venison cooked two ways. At Schulhaus, Austrian wines from the Burgenland and Wachau are paired with attractively presented, flavor-packed meals.

  10. Brezl Gwölb, tucked away in a back alley near Freyung, has a devoted following thanks to its delectably fresh Austrian home cooking. The crypt-like cellar, lit by candles and playing classical music in the background, transports you back in time with its carvings, brick arches, wrought-iron lights, and alcoves. It's no surprise that the place is packed with regulars.

The Brezl (pretzels) here are exactly as they should be - chewy, fluffy, and fresh from the oven, as the name says. Warming foods like beef soup with noodles, schnitzel, and cheesy Pinzgauer Kasnocken dumplings are paired with excellent Lower Austrian wines.
