A global Australian bank and provider of financial services, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited (ANZ) is based in Melbourne, Victoria. It ranks fourth in terms of market capitalization and is Australia's second-largest bank by assets.
ANZ is one of Australia's four major banks, along with Commonwealth Bank, NAB, and Westpac, established in 1970 when the Bank of Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) merged with the Bank of England, Scotland & Australia (ES&A). It was considered the largest bank merger in Australian history at the time.
ANZ's business mainly takes place in the Australian market, with a series of commercial and retail banks dominating. ANZ is also considered the largest bank in New Zealand where it was known as ANZ National Bank in 2003 and later changed to ANZ Bank New Zealand in 2012. From 2003 to 2012, ANZ operated two brands in New Zealand, ANZ and the National Bank of New Zealand. However, the National Bank brand was discontinued in 2012, some branches closed and others converted into ANZ branches.
