The sudden eruption of Paektu Mountain, an active volcano that crosses the boundary between China and North Korea, results in powerful earthquakes in both North and South Korea. On the Korean peninsula, chaos reigns, and additional eruptions are expected there. Professor Kang Bong-rae (Ma Dong-seok), who had studied Mount Baekdu and its potential future eruptions, developed the idea that Jeon Yoo-kyung (Jeon Hye-jin) planned an operation around in order to avert yet another catastrophe.
A special forces squad taking part in the operation had Jo In-chang (Ha Jung-woo) as its leader. Lee Joon-pyeong (Lee Byung-hun), a spy for the Korean People's Army stationed in North Korea, is contacted by Jo In-chang. Meanwhile, Jo In Chang's wife Choi Ji Young (Suzy) is alone in Seoul. She struggles to survive the disaster.
