The Sound of a Flower (2015)
A 2015 South Korean historical drama film called The Sound of a Flower is based on the life of Jin Chae-seon, who in 1867 became the first female pansori singer in Joseon. At a period when it was against the law for women to sing in public or act on stage, Jin puts her life in danger by dressing as a male. The connection between Jin and her pansori teacher Shin Jae-hyo is the main subject of the movie.
Lee Jong-pil, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Kim Ah-young, directed the movie. For her part as Jin Chae-seon, Bae Suzy spent a year studying pansori. Shin Jae-hyo, her instructor, is portrayed by Ryu Seung-ryong. The king's father and regent, Kim Nam-gil, is represented by Song Sae-byeok as Kim Se-jong, a well-known pansori singer. Shin's pupils include Ahn Jae-hong and Lee Dong-hwi. After a period of training, Jin performs the Chunhyangga at the palace. Heungseon Daewongun is enchanted by her performance and decides to keep her at court. Shin Jae-hyo then realizes how much he loves her and composes "Dorihwaga" to express his longing for his pupil.
