Biltmore Estate

The youngest son of railroad and steamboat magnate William H. Vanderbilt, George Washington Vanderbilt, inherited his father's wealth. He used a portion of his wealth in 1889 to build the Biltmore Estate, which is currently the biggest private mansion in the country.

One of the Most Beautiful Castles in America is Biltmore Estate. The four-acre castle has 250 rooms, 35 bedrooms, 43 baths, an indoor pool, a fitness facility, and 65 fireplaces. It is still a private residence held by George Vanderbilt's heirs and is located close to Asheville, North Carolina, however it is accessible to the public.

The house's construction got under way in 1889. A brick kiln that could produce 32,000 bricks per day and a woodworking shop were constructed on-site to support such a huge undertaking. To transport supplies to the construction site, a three-mile railroad offshoot was built. About 1,000 laborers and 60 stonemasons were needed to complete the main house's construction.
