Thornewood Castle

A 500-year-old castle that was originally constructed in England may be found in Tacoma, Washington, on the other shore. Chester Thorne, one of the founders of the Port of Tacoma, acquired the house in 1907, had it disassembled, and had it shipped there. It eventually joined a bigger edifice created for his bride, Anna.

Welsh red brick made up the exterior walls, while English oak from 500 years ago was used to hand-hew the doors and stairs. The grounds around the castle are made beautiful with fountains and underground gardens. It has appeared in numerous movies, including Stephen King's "Rose Red," and offers bed & breakfast suites, vacation rentals, and a magnificent wedding site.

Without leaving the United States, you may experience a genuine slice of England at Thornewood.
Thornewood is extremely special because of its past, which is firmly based in both English and American history.

A century ago, components of a 400-year-old English castle were transported from England to the Pacific Northwest via the Horn of Africa. Here in America, an actual classic English Tudor Gothic castle was totally rebuilt and recreated using these elements. Thornewood Castle is full of history and beauty, from the Olmsted Brothers' English gardens to 16th-century stained glass windows.
