Boldt Castle

One of the most well-known castles in the US is Boldt Castle. Millionaire hotelier George C. Boldt commissioned the construction of Boldt Castle for his devoted wife Louise on a separate island in the St. Lawrence River.

The castle's construction started in 1900 and is situated on Heart Island, close to Alexandria Bay, New York. The 120-room, six-story palace was constructed by 300 laborers, including carpenters, stonemasons, and artists. When Mrs. Boldt unexpectedly passed away in 1904, work ceased. Up until 1977, when the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority bought it and started the restoration process, it sat abandoned and at the whim of the weather. The public can now access it.

Inconsolable, Mr. Boldt immediately halted all development on Heart Island, leaving the place unoccupied for more than 70 years.
