Fonthill Castle

Archaeologist, anthropologist, antiquarian, and ceramicist Henry Chapman Mercer was an American. In Doylestown, Pennsylvania, he constructed Fonthill Castle between 1908 and 1912. The castle, which serves as his residence, is an eclectic fusion of Byzantine, Gothic, and Medieval architectural elements. It also holds his tile and print collections.

It features numerous pieces of built-in furniture as well as numerous Mercer-made ornamental tiles. Mercer also acquired other relics throughout his trips around the globe, such as cuneiform tablets from Mesopotamia that predate 2300 BC. The castle is accessible to the public seven days a week and is included on the National Register of Historic Places.
