Cairo University
Cairo University, despite its name, is located in Giza and overlooks the Nile. The public university, one of the country's oldest schools, was founded in 1908 and has over 230,000 students, approximately 3% of them from outside. Only 2% of faculty and 2% of students in Egyptian universities are from outside the nation. International students in Cairo have very inexpensive living costs and are close to some of the country's ancient attractions.
The Cairo University comprises around 25 faculties, including engineering, medicine, agriculture, and archaeology, and undergraduate programs ranging from pomology to physical therapy. While Arabic is Egypt's official language, English is the "primary language" in universities, according to Ashraf Mahmoud Hatem, secretary-general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Universities.
The Grand Celebration Hall, a well-known landmark of Cairo University with its domed ceiling, hosts a variety of cultural and artistic events and can accommodate up to 4,000 people. The Central Library is another eye-catching structure on campus.
Cairo University is the best university in Egypt ranked 546 in the world. Notable graduates include former United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Oscar-nominated actor Omar Sharif, former Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, and Amr Moussa, Arab League Secretary-General from 2001 to 2011.
A third of Egypt's population is under the age of 15, and there is a growing demand for higher education. Following the Arab Spring upheavals, Egypt began contemplating massive improvements to its higher education system.
