Tanta University
Tanta University was founded in 1962 as an extension of the University of Alexandria. It began with merely a faculty of medicine until becoming an independent university known as the University of the Middle Delta in 1972, with a college of medicine, a faculty of science, a faculty of agriculture, and a faculty of education. Tanta University was established in 1973.
Tanta University has since added an engineering faculty, a law faculty, a veterinary medicine faculty, a physical education faculty, a dentistry faculty, a pharmacy faculty, and an arts faculty.
In 1983, Tanta University established a branch institution in Kafr ash Shaykh, which separated in 2006 to become an independent university known as the Kafr ash Shaykh University.
Tanta is the fifth most populous city in Egypt, with a population of roughly 421,100 people. Tanta is the seat of the Gharbia Governorate, a cotton ginning center located between Cairo and Alexandria.
Famous for its sweet shops and roasted chickpeas, the city comes to life in late October when three million people from the Delta and other Arabic countries descend on the city to celebrate the end of the cotton harvest.
