Cathédrale
Given that it is run by Tao Group and is situated just across from Webster Hall, the Moxy hotel's East Village location has a strong feel of a clubstaurant. But under the direction of chef Jason Hall, the French-Mediterranean restaurant doesn't skimp on quality. For a more upscale experience, diners can choose oysters with caviar on top of fettuccine topped with black truffles. But there is also more straightforward fare like hamburgers, grilled fish, and chocolate souffle.
In addition, Cathédrale has an open kitchen with copper accents and a bar area with retro neon signs that pay homage to legendary East Village nightclubs like the Palladium and The Saint. The angular shape of the bar itself makes for flirty sightlines. Another surprise is a retractable roofed deck for alfresco dining. It feels like the improvised backyard gardens nestled behind many East Village eateries, with seating for 58 and vegetation overflowing out of rebar pots and what appears to be rusting card filing cabinets.
