Combat diabetes
Researchers from the Indian Council of Medical Research explain in a recent article published by the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism that black seed oil "causes gradual partial regeneration of pancreatic beta-cells, increases the lowered serum insulin concentrations, and decreases the elevated serum glucose". This is particularly significant since Nigella sativa is one of the only foods in the world that has been linked to both type 1 and type 2 diabetes prevention.
Black seed really "improves glucose tolerance as efficiently as metformin; however, it has not demonstrated major ill effects and has extremely low toxicity", the research claims. This is important since metformin, one of the medications used to treat type 2 diabetes that is most frequently administered, can have a variety of adverse effects, such as:
- Bloating
- Constipation/diarrhea
- Flushing of the skin
- Gas/indigestion
- Heartburn
- Headache
- Nail changes
- Metallic taste in the mouth
- Muscle pain
- Stomach pain
