Despicable Me

The 2010 American computer-animated comedy Despicable Me was created by Illumination Entertainment (as the company's first movie) and released by Universal Pictures. From a screenplay written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, based on a unique narrative by Sergio Pablos, the movie was directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin (in their feature directing debuts), and it was produced by Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy, and John Cohen. Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Miranda Cosgrove, Kristen Wiig, Will Arnett, and Julie Andrews provide the voices for the movie. In the movie, a supervillain named Gru adopts three orphan girls by the names of Margo, Edith, and Agnes. He also makes an attempt to steal a shrink ray from his adversary Vector so that he can shrink and steal the moon.


On June 19, 2010, Despicable Me made its world premiere at the Moscow International Film Festival. On July 9, 2010, Universal Pictures released the movie in theaters around the country. The movie made $543.2 million globally and was well-received, making it the ninth-highest-grossing movie of 2010. It was a Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Annie Award nominee for Best Animated Feature Film. The first film in the Despicable Me franchise, which would go on to contain four additional movies: Despicable Me (2013), Minions (2015), Despicable Me 3 (2017), and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022). Despicable Me 4, the sixth movie, is currently under production and is scheduled for 2024 release.
