Dumbo

American animated fantasy movie Dumbo was released by RKO Radio Pictures in 1941 and was made by Walt Disney Productions. The fourth Disney animated feature film is based on a story that Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl wrote and Helen Durney illustrated for a novelty toy prototype ("Roll-a-Book"). Jumbo Jr., an elephant unfairly referred to as "Dumbo," as in "stupid," is the primary character. He is mocked for having large ears, but in reality, he can fly by using his ears as wings. His mother is his only actual buddy for most of the movie, and his friendship with Timothy the mouse is a spoof of the conventional hostility between mice and elephants.

The Disney studios' purposeful pursuit of simplicity and economy in Dumbo was an attempt to make up for the financial losses of both Pinocchio and Fantasia. One of Disney's shortest animated films clocks in around 64 minutes. The RCA system was used to record sound in the traditional manner. The Sonovox system was used to synthesize one voice, but the RCA System was also used to record it.
