Elmo in Grouchland
The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland is a 1999 American musical comedic adventure film that Gary Halvorson directed in his first major motion picture. This movie, along with Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird, was the second to be based on the children's television show Sesame Street (1985). Along with Kevin Clash, Jerry Nelson, Frank Oz, and Steve Whitmire from the Muppets, the film also stars Mandy Patinkin and Vanessa Williams.
The movie, which was made by Jim Henson Pictures and Children's Television Workshop, was released on October 1, 1999, by Columbia Pictures. Despite receiving largely favorable reviews from critics, the movie bombed at the box office, making only $12 million against a more than $26 million budget.
The movie was one of the few Sesame Street projects that The Jim Henson Company produced in-house. This was the final Muppet feature film starring Oz, as Muppets from Space (which was released the same year) marked his retirement as a full-time puppeteer. In addition, this was Emilio Delgado's final Sesame Street movie before his passing in 2022 and Caroll Spinney's final theatrical Muppet movie before his retirement in 2018, and his death in 2019.
