Kazakh National Pedagogical University Abai
The Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University is one of Central Asia's most prestigious educational institutions. It is located in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in the middle of the city. Abai University had a record enrollment of over 23,000 students in 2003, the majority of them were from Kazakhstan and other Central Asian nations. On September 1, 1928, the first Kazakh institute of higher learning, Kazakh State University, was established. It had a single pedagogical faculty with three divisions: physico-mathematics, natural sciences, and linguistic studies.
It was believed that three more faculties would be created: pedagogical, agricultural, and medical. From 1932 to 1933, they were obliged to work. The newly opened institute of higher education has opted to expand as an autonomous pedagogical college in order to support the intensive development of folk education. As a result, the university was renamed Kazakh State Pedagogical College (KAZPI) in 1930, Abai State University in 1935, and finally, Abai University in 1989, when it expanded its subjects of study to include more than technical education. Today's Abai University began as a Women's School in a tiny one-story structure in Vernenskoy.
