Kigoma
Kigoma is a town and lake port in Tanzania's Kigoma-Ujiji District, on the northeastern shores of Lake Tanganyika and near the borders with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It has a population of 215,458 people and serves as the capital of the surrounding Kigoma Region. Ujiji, a historic trading town, is located 6 kilometers southeast of Kigoma. Lake Tanganyika is a must-see when visiting Kigoma. Tourists can visit old German colonial-era buildings and take cultural tours to nearby villages such as Katonga.
Kigoma is also one of the busiest ports on northeastern Lake Tanganyika because it was historically the only one with a working railway connection, providing a direct link to the ocean port at Dar es Salaam. Kigoma Port, located in Kigoma Bay, has a 200-meter-long wharf, and several cranes, and is equipped to handle shipping containers. The town serves as a gateway to incredible locations such as the Mahale Mountains and Gombe National Park. The town is known for its beautiful architecture and the scenic view of the Lake, which is home to the stunning rainbow cichlid fish!
