Stone Town

Stone Town, also known as Mji Mkongwe, is the oldest part of Zanzibar, the Tanzanian island's main city. Formerly the capital of the Sultanate of Zanzibar and a 19th-century spice and slave trade center, it retained its significance as Zanzibar's main city during the British Protectorate. Stone Town is of exceptional historical and artistic significance in East Africa. Its architecture, which dates primarily from the nineteenth century, reflects diverse influences in Swahili culture, offering a unique blend of Arabic, Persian, Indian, and European elements. As a result, the town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000.
