Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, or KAIST, is a public university that was established in 1971. The main campus of the science and technology-focused university, where more than 90% of students attend classes, is in Daejeon, South Korea. Daejeon is about 85 miles south of Seoul, the capital city. Tuition is usually the same for international and domestic students. Many government and school-sponsored scholarships are also available to KAIST students, including some that cover full tuition and fees. The university has over 20 student dormitories and a few apartment complexes for married students.
Natural sciences, life science and bioengineering, engineering, liberal arts and convergence science, and business are all offered at KAIST. The academic calendar at the university is semester-based, and the primary language of instruction is English, though some courses are taught in Korean. The KAIST Institute is one of the university's research facilities, consisting of five research institutes – KI for BioCentury, KI for Information Technology Convergence, KI for Robotics, KI for NanoCentury, and KI for Health Science and Technology – as well as two centers. At the KAIST Institute, approximately 220 faculty members and 350 students and researchers conduct interdisciplinary research. Every year, approximately 200 students participate in the URP program.
Its research units are focused on interesting and advanced areas such as Entertainment Engineering and Eco-Energy. This top Korean university consists of five colleges, seven schools, and 13 graduate schools, all with the goal of creating global value. KAIST is a multi-ethnic Korean university that accepts nearly 600 international students each year. Furthermore, nearly 80% of courses are taught in English.
