May Improve Mood
It seems that turmeric, and more especially its main ingredient curcumin, may improve mood and lessen depressive symptoms. 60 people with significant depressive disorders participated in a 6-week trial where they were given either curcumin, an antidepressant, or both. The combined group saw the greatest improvements, whereas those who received simply curcumin saw improvements comparable to those who received antidepressants.
Low levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factors may potentially be related to depression (BDNF). Curcumin appears to increase BDNF levels, which suggests that it may lessen depressive symptoms. However, there haven't been many studies done in this area, so additional research is required before drawing firm conclusions. The active component of turmeric, curcumin, may help lessen depressive symptoms.
