Portage Lakes
Northeast Ohio's Portage Lakes is a collection of glacial kettle lakes and reservoirs. The name derives from an ancient Indian portage route that linked the Tuscarawas River, a tributary of the Muskingum River, which flows south to the Ohio River, and the Cuyahoga River, which flows north to Lake Erie. In Ohio, Portage Lakes State Park is situated on a significant watershed divide and at one of the state's highest peaks. Both the Ohio River and Lake Erie receive water from the lakes in varying amounts.
Portage Lakes State Park's several bodies of water provide visitors with a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities. It's common to go swimming, boating, and fishing. The park's wetlands draw shorebirds and waterfowl, giving visitors fun opportunities for hunting and animal viewing. There are several boating, fishing, and swimming options in this system of eight lakes. The lakes' varied topography and natural drop-offs on the bottom make them some of the best places in northeast Ohio for bass fishing. Ice fishing is a great winter activity in Portage Lakes.
