Public
This location has a strong design history. Public is the newest place to be seen and be seen in the Lower East Side. It was conceptualized by Ian Schrager, co-founder of the Studio 54 nightclub and former hotelier/developer, and designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the architectural firm behind London's Tate Modern extension. The interiors were overseen by British John Pawson, who had previously designed plans for the minimalist style of Schrager's own New York apartment.
The idea, is housed in a brand-new, gleaming skyscraper and has 367 guest rooms as well as a restaurant, luncheonette-cum-grocery, bars, a gym, landscaped gardens, communal workspaces, and a dedicated art gallery/exhibition area/dancefloor ("like Brooklyn's Academy of Music, only better," according to Schrager), pushes online convenience to its logical conclusion. There is no front desk; you must use your own device to access the check-in process and get room service.
With scarcely their furnishings, floor-to-ceiling windows, 10 USB ports—yes, 10—and an Apple TV where guests may watch Netflix, the bedrooms are minimal but not bare. The ground-floor Public Kitchen is run by renowned New York chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, while the rooftop bar is quickly becoming the most well-liked new nightlife destination in the city.
