The Dig

The Dig is a British drama film directed by Simon Stone in 2021, based on John Preston's 2007 novel of the same name, which reimagines the events of the Sutton Hoo dig in 1939.

In this film set in the late 1930s, Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, and Lily James star as a wealthy widow who employs an archaeologist to dig up the vast burial mounds on her property, only to discover the remains of a massive ship from the Dark Ages. It was released on a limited basis on January 15, 2021, and then became available for streaming on Netflix on January 29, 2021. Critics praised the film, and it got five nominations for British Academy Film Awards, including one for Outstanding British Film.
