The Elephant Man (1980)
In 1980, Anthony Hopkins co-starred with John Hurt in the historical drama The Elephant Man as Dr. Frederic Treves. The film is based on the true story of John Merrick, a man who was born with a congenital disorder and makes a fortune off of his appearance. Merrick is found during a concert by Dr. Fredric Treves, who wants him to teach London about his condition and to bless the world with his kind nature.
This is a fantastic film in every aspect. As the Elephant Man, John Hurt is fantastic, and Anthony Hopkins does a great job portraying both sides of Dr. Treves - the side that sincerely wants to assist Merrick and the side that wants to make a name for himself off of him. Eight Academy Awards were nominated for The Elephant Man, including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. This is one of those films that should be on everyone's "100 Movies to Watch Before You Die" lists.
