The Lion in Winter (1968)

The Lion in Winter is a 1968 British-American historical drama film. Anthony Harvey directed the film, which was written by James Goldman (based on his own play of the same name). The film was a box office hit and earned three Academy Awards, including Hepburn's third for Best Actress, making her the first woman to win the award three times. In 2003, the film was remade for television.

Politics, vengeance, greed, and ambition are all there. It's Christmas Eve 1183, and King Henry II (Peter O'Toole) is about to announce his heir to the throne. The battle for the throne, on the other hand, is complicated. Henry has three sons and wishes for his eldest son, Prince John (Nigel Terry), to succeed him. Queen Eleanor (Katharine Hepburn), Henry's wife, has different plans. Prince Richard (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is her son, and she feels he should be King. As the family and other schemers assemble for the vacation, each attempts to persuade the King to choose his or her preferred alternative.
