The Remains of the Day (1993)
Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson are two incredibly talented and well-known actors. Their on-screen chemistry was evident when the two featured in The Remains of the Day, and their performances were the best parts of the film. James Stevens (Anthony Hopkins) works as a proper English butler to the doltish Lord Darlington in the 1930s (James Fox). Stevens is so determined that he foregoes visiting his dying father in order to serve, and he ignores Darlington's Nazi sympathies and rising anti-Semitism. Stevens seeks to reunite with Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson), Darlington's chief housekeeper, twenty years after his employer's death and begins to regret his loyalty to his old master.
This drama/romance is based on loyalty, principles, and struggling with past mistakes, and it is profoundly emotional work. The Academy gave The Remains of the Day eight Oscar nominations, including Best Actor (for Hopkins), Best Actress (for Thompson), and Best Picture.
