The Lalaurie House
If you've read anything about ghosts and hauntings in New Orleans, you've undoubtedly heard of the LaLaurie Mansion. This one may be familiar to TV viewers as the inspiration for a house in American Horror Story. American Horror Story has made an already infamous location even more notorious.
The Lalaurie House was once owned by a wealthy couple who mistreated their slaves. That's a hundred times worse than most southern slave owners, and that's saying a lot. Many slaves in the house were eventually discovered to have been murdered in heinous ways, and there are reports of ghosts still roaming the grounds. That did not deter actor Nicolas Cage from purchasing the valuable property in 2007.
This house has been the source of paranormal activity for nearly 200 years. Many hauntings are attributed to the slaves that Madame LaLaurie kept on the property, which should come as no surprise. The LaLaurie Mansion has a room where slaves were frequently kept, and reports of moaning from that room are common. Phantom footsteps reverberate through the house on a regular basis. Many people who have stood near the house have reported feeling possessed by negative energy.
