The Schweppe Estate
The Schweppe Estate was built as a wedding present for Laura Shedd and Charles Schweppe by Shedd's father in 1917. During its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s, it was said to have entertained visiting English and Swedish royalty. The 28-room Tudor- and Georgian-style mansion was designed by Frederick Wainwright Perkins of Perkins & Will and sits on a 5.4-acre portion of what was once a much larger estate. According to the listing, it has 425 feet of private beach, 12 bedrooms, and 11 fireplaces.
According to published reports, Laura Schweppe née Shedd died of a heart attack in 1937 at the age of 58, leaving $200,000 of her $10 million fortune to her husband and the majority to her children. When Charles Schweppe committed suicide four years later, at the age of 60, he was discovered with an unsigned note that read, "I was awake all night. It's dreadful." A strange footprint was discovered in a concrete room, and Charles and Laura Schweppe are said to still look out a specific window in the house. Today, the Schweppe Estate is among the most expensive haunted houses at $12 million.
