It is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., and has served as the official residence of every President of the United States since John Adams in 1800. The term "White House" is frequently used to refer to the president and his advisers.

This is one of the most difficult alleged haunted houses to gain access to for ghost hunters; however, a number of stories have emerged from this famous house. There are numerous legends about former presidents' ghosts roaming the White House, ranging from Abe Lincoln to John Adams to Thomas Jefferson. There are even reports of British soldiers patrolling the halls, presumably still irritated by the American Revolution. There's no word on whether Bill Clinton's ghost plays his saxophone every night while the President tries to sleep. Wait, given that Bill Clinton is still alive, it could be him.

  2. The Schweppe Estate was built as a wedding present for Laura Shedd and Charles Schweppe by Shedd's father in 1917. During its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s, it was said to have entertained visiting English and Swedish royalty. The 28-room Tudor- and Georgian-style mansion was designed by Frederick Wainwright Perkins of Perkins & Will and sits on a 5.4-acre portion of what was once a much larger estate. According to the listing, it has 425 feet of private beach, 12 bedrooms, and 11 fireplaces.

According to published reports, Laura Schweppe née Shedd died of a heart attack in 1937 at the age of 58, leaving $200,000 of her $10 million fortune to her husband and the majority to her children. When Charles Schweppe committed suicide four years later, at the age of 60, he was discovered with an unsigned note that read, "I was awake all night. It's dreadful." A strange footprint was discovered in a concrete room, and Charles and Laura Schweppe are said to still look out a specific window in the house. Today, the Schweppe Estate is among the most expensive haunted houses at $12 million.

  3. The Ennis House is one of the most expensive haunted houses at $4.5 million. It is located in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, USA, south of Griffith Park. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the house for Charles and Mabel Ennis in 1923, and it was completed in 1924. It was built in the northern Los Angeles area primarily of interlocking pre-cast concrete blocks. The design is based on ancient Maya temples, and the Ennis House, along with other Frank Lloyd Wright buildings such as the A. D. German Warehouse in Wisconsin and the Aline Barnsdall Hollyhock House in Hollywood, is sometimes referred to as an example of Mayan Revival architecture. The relief ornamentation on its 27,000 perforated and patterned decomposed granite blocks, inspired by the symmetrical reliefs of Puuc architecture in Uxmal, is its most prominent detail.

This Ennis House isn't actually haunted, but it was the setting for many terrifying films, including The Day of the Locust, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, House on Haunted Hill, and Nosferatu. The house was famously designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, making it extremely valuable regardless of whether or not any movie ghosts are present.

  4. Because of a 2007 episode of the HGTV television series Secret Spaces on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, this house has earned the title of the most famous haunted house. The Britannia Manor II was built in 1987 and is located on a hill in Austin, Texas. While the house may not be haunted by genuine paranormal residents, it has hosted numerous spooky Halloween parties and haunted house fun.

Britannia Manor was famous before 1995 for hosting the most elaborate haunted house in the United States. Garriott, who is its old owner, spent a lot of money on his haunted house's makeup, tools, construction materials, special effects, and costumes every two years around Halloween. Britannia Manor was a full-on Halloween experience. The events were designed in the style of a role-playing game. Participants would travel through Garriott's mountain property in adventuring parties, gathering clues to solve mysteries and quests while confronted with various perils and pitfalls.

  5. If you've read anything about ghosts and hauntings in New Orleans, you've undoubtedly heard of the LaLaurie Mansion. This one may be familiar to TV viewers as the inspiration for a house in American Horror Story. American Horror Story has made an already infamous location even more notorious.

The Lalaurie House was once owned by a wealthy couple who mistreated their slaves. That's a hundred times worse than most southern slave owners, and that's saying a lot. Many slaves in the house were eventually discovered to have been murdered in heinous ways, and there are reports of ghosts still roaming the grounds. That did not deter actor Nicolas Cage from purchasing the valuable property in 2007.

This house has been the source of paranormal activity for nearly 200 years. Many hauntings are attributed to the slaves that Madame LaLaurie kept on the property, which should come as no surprise. The LaLaurie Mansion has a room where slaves were frequently kept, and reports of moaning from that room are common. Phantom footsteps reverberate through the house on a regular basis. Many people who have stood near the house have reported feeling possessed by negative energy.

  7. Amityville House is probably one of the most expensive haunted houses, and it has been the subject of numerous horror films over the years. However, in real life, Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six members of his family. Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed them on November 13, 1974, at 112 Ocean Avenue, a large Dutch Colonial house in a suburban neighborhood in Amityville, on Long Island's south shore. In November 1975, he was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to six years to life in prison. In March 2021, DeFeo died in custody.

George and Kathy Lutz and their three children moved into the house in December 1975. The Lutzes fled the house after 28 days, claiming to have been terrorized by paranormal phenomena while living there. They hear voices, hear music, and smell noxious odors.

Amityville House's value is primarily due to its celebrity. Other comparable-sized houses in the area sell for around $600,000, but maybe you're paying nearly double that to be potentially murdered by ghosts.

  8. Kimball Castle in Gilford, New Hampshire, United States, was built by a wealthy railroad baron and is now for sale for $879,000. This castle has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and sits on 23 acres, which also houses a number of outbuildings. Benjamin Kimball built the castle in 1897 after being inspired by an interesting castle he saw in Germany. The structure cost $50,000 to build at the time, which equates to more than $1.2 million in modern dollars. The castle, which was once stunning in its grandeur and featured on postcards, has long been neglected and is now considered by town officials to be an 'unattractive nuisance' and an 'extreme hazard.'

The dilapidated manor has deteriorated to the point where it was featured on an episode of 'Ghost Hunters' in the United States a few years ago. The actual haunting does not appear to be particularly frightening. The previous occupants of the structure stated that the doors open and close and that they can hear horses in the existing stable on the property.

  9. The Lizzie Borden House is famous for being the home of Lizzie Borden and her family, as well as the site of Lizzie's father and stepmother Andrew and Abby Borden's unsolved double murder in 1892. It is situated at 230 Second Street in Fall River, Massachusetts. Tours of the house frequently mention the possibility of ghostly activity, and self-proclaimed "medium" Maureen Wood and self-proclaimed "paranormal scientist" Ron Kolek describe ghostly events in the house in their book The Ghost Chronicles. So far, her ghost has not killed anyone, but anything is possible.

  10. Franklin Castle, located at 4308 Franklin Boulevard in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood, is a Victorian stone house built in the American Queen Anne style for Hannes Tiedemann, a prosperous German immigrant. The structure has four stories, over twenty rooms, and eighty windows. This is by far the cheapest haunted house on this list of the most expensive haunted houses, but it is nonetheless iconic. It is said to be Ohio's most haunted house.

Emma Tiedemann, Tiedemann's fifteen-year-old daughter, died of diabetes on January 15, 1881. Soon after, Tiedemann's elderly mother, Wiebeka, died, bringing the property to its second death. The Tiedemanns would bury three more children over the next three years, sparking speculation that there was more to the deaths. Rumors of Tiedemann's crimes (including pedophile and murder) in the house have contributed to Franklin Castle's reputation as a haunted house.

It is currently being considered for conversion into a bed and breakfast.
