The Mistake Room
TMR was founded in 2014 to commission new works and projects, develop and present research-driven exhibitions, encourage the production of ideas through discursive initiatives, and organize moments and events that expand what they know about art and culture.
Since 2014, The Mistake Room has been a leader in developing an alternative approach for exhibiting Latinx artists' work that goes beyond representation. César Garcia-Alvarez and Glenn Kaino, the founders, wish to put Latinx art in perspective and assist visitors to understand the diversity of art practice with Latin American roots. That's not to say the Mistake Room hasn't put on other stunning shows; in its early years, the independent space hosted retrospectives of key institutional figures like Vivian Suter and Ed Clark, showcasing their earliest works and sparking discussions about their impact and ties to mid-tier and smaller gallery spaces.
