Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán
The Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán is the state's largest such institution, and, without a doubt, one of Mexico's best universities.. It includes six campuses, five of which are in Mérida, the state capital, and a Multidisciplinary Unit in Tizimn, east of Yucatán.
Its origins may be traced back to 1611, when an imperial order authorized the establishment of the College of Mérida to educate locals. Over the course of three centuries, the institution transitioned from being administered by the Society of Jesus to being secular and liberal.
The National Southeast University, founded in 1922 by then-governor Felipe Carrillo Puerto, taught medicine, engineering, jurisprudence, and the arts. The University of Yucatán was renamed after a reorganization of the university that began in 1938. It was given independence in 1984.
From bone anthropology to habitat design, the University's 15 faculties offer 21 undergraduate and 26 postgraduate programmes. Its mission statement is that it exists to provide humanistic education and to generate graduates who contribute to human growth and address local, national, and global concerns.
The university's "Vision 2022" goal aspires to make it the most socially influential higher education institution in Mexico. Among its graduates are historian Silvio Zavala, as well as politicians Rolando Zapata Bello and Angélica Araujo Lara.
The institution is well-known for its regular Ballet Folklorico, and the jaguar is its sports mascot.
