The National Autonomous University of Mexico (NAUM) is Latin America's largest university and one of the best universities in Mexico. In 1869, the Instituto Literario y Escuela de Artes y Oficios (Literary Institute and School of Arts and Crafts) in Pachuca became the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH), or Autonomous University of Hidalgo State.

Octavio S. Mondragón founded the Autonomous University of Querétaro in 1951 as a high school and university that solely provided legal and engineering degrees, despite its origins dating back to 1625, from the Jesuit College of San Ignacio. Since then, the university has added additional programs, including the formation of the schools of chemistry and nursing in 1952. Later, in 1953, the Institute of Fine Arts was established, and in 1954, the School of Commerce was founded.

The schools of psychology and contemporary languages were established in 1967.

The school of medicine was established in 1978, while sociology was included in 1984. The Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán is the state's largest such institution, and, without a doubt, one of Mexico's best universities.. It includes six campuses, five of which are in Mérida, the state capital, and a Multidisciplinary Unit in Tizimn, east of Yucatán.
