Vianden Castle

Vianden is a town that spans both sides of the River Our and is incredibly lovely. In terms of architectural value, Vianden Castle (Buerg Veianen), a beautiful feudal mansion that dates back to the ninth century, is unmatched in the Ardennes and Eifel. The town's exterior medieval wall, which has numerous spectacular guard towers, is also noteworthy.

Plan your trip to coincide, if you can, with the annual Vianden Medieval Festival. This well-liked family-friendly celebration, which takes place the first weekend in August, is well-known for its jousting and sword-fighting competitions, its market, and its knights' camp.

The parish church, which has two naves, is very interesting to see. Vianden Castle was created in the Gothic style in 1248 and has since undergone a thorough restoration. A lapidary museum that chronicles the history of the area's formerly significant stone- and gem trades is housed in the ancient Trinitarian cloister, which dates to 1250. Additionally, a modest art gallery housed in a former estate features a number of significant paintings by 18th- and 19th-century artists.

A collection of mementos from Victor Hugo's several trips to Vianden can be found at the home where he lived during his exile there in 1871. Access to the stunning scenery of the Our Valley is provided by a sizable network of well-maintained walking routes that are well-signposted. A chairlift also ascends to a height of 440 meters where visitors may take in breathtaking views.
