  1. The Universidad de Costa Rica ranks first in this list of the best universities in Costa Rica. It is a public university in the Central American Republic of Costa Rica. Ciudad Universitaria Rodrigo Facio, the university's main campus, lies in San Pedro Montes de Oca, in the province of San José. It was founded as the Universidad de Santo Tomás in 1843 and is Costa Rica's oldest and largest higher education institution. It is also the country's and Central America's most important research university, and one of Latin America's most distinguished universities. Throughout the year, approximately 45,000 students attend UCR.

The main school is located in San Pedro, San José, on a 100-acre complex. Other regional campuses are spread across the country to reach out to Costa Ricans in rural areas. Applicants from Costa Rica must take an admissions test at the UCR. In the United States, this test is similar to the SAT. This test's score is combined with the student's grades from his or her senior year to determine the student's admission score, which is then used to determine admission to a certain major and financial aid. The maximum possible score on the admission test is 800, while the lowest required score is 442. Students who score an 800 on the SAT are frequently featured on the front pages of Costa Rican newspapers.

  2. The Costa Rica Institute of Technology (TEC) (also known as Tecnológico de Costa Rica) is a university in Costa Rica that specializes in engineering, advanced science, and research. Its main campus is 24 kilometers east of San José, in the Dulce Nombre district of Cartago canton in Costa Rica's Cartago Province.

Engineering (building, industrial production, electronics, industrial maintenance, biotechnology, mechatronics, computers), computer science, and business management are among the fields offered at the TEC.

The main campus is in the Dulce Nombre area, on the outskirts of downtown Cartago. Santa Clara, San Carlos, downtown San José, near downtown Alajuela, and Limon all have regional campuses.

On October 26, 2009, by Ordinary Session No2635, Article 11, the institution altered its name and manual of identity from Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica to be recognized simply as Tecnológico de Costa Rica for promotional and marketing reasons.

While the institution's legal name is still Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, it should be known in Spanish as simply "Tecnológico de Costa Rica" according to the institution's identity manual; however, in English, the identity manual states that the name should be Costa Rica Institute of Technology due to published research works.
