  1. The first on this list of best universities in Ethiopia is Addis Ababa University. Addis Ababa Institution, Ethiopia's oldest university, was established in 1950. Among the faculties where students can pursue undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees are biological engineering, social sciences, humanities, language studies, journalism and communication, development studies, business and economics, law and governance studies, education and behavioral studies, natural and computational sciences, veterinary medicine and agriculture, and health science.


    Addis Ababa University is linked to many research institutes, including the Institute of Ethiopian Studies. Furthermore, students have the option of visiting one of thirteen other campuses. Twelve of these are in Addis Abeba, with the remaining one at Bishoftu, about 45 kilometers away.


    The main university library (John F. Kennedy Memorial Library) is on campus (at Sidist Kilo) and houses a significant collection of student study materials. For students who are interested in sports, there is also a sports center with playing fields and courts. There are also various clubs to join, as well as yearly tournaments where students can represent the institution.

  2. Jimma University was founded in the 1980s by the amalgamation of the Jimma Institute of Health Science and the Jimma College of Agriculture. Both universities were national leaders in their respective fields, and the merger allowed the two former specialty institutions to join to build a new, diverse, and development-oriented institution.


    Throughout the 1990s, Ethiopians were determined to overcome the country's significant development challenges.

    Such obstacles were experienced in all spheres of society and all locations. Given this, new institutions needed to be established in a way that would assist the country's growth.   3. Mekelle University (MU) is located 783 kilometers from Ethiopia's capital in the town of Mekelle in the Tigray region of Northern Ethiopia. The University was established in May 2000 as an autonomous higher education institution by the Government of Ethiopia by the merger of two earlier institutions, Mekelle Business College and Mekelle University College. It is known as one of the best universities in Ethiopia.


    Endayesus (main), Adihaqi, Ayder, Aynalem, and Kalamino are the five campuses of Mekelle University. The seven schools of MU offer undergraduate and graduate studies. Business and Economics, Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources, Health Sciences, Law and Governance, Social Sciences and Languages (CSSL), and Veterinary Medicine are the colleges involved.


    The Mekelle University is well-known for its considerable research efforts in the subjects of Dryland Agriculture and Natural Resources. The drylands of Ethiopia (including arid, semi-arid, and sub-humid regions) account for roughly 70% of the total landmass and 46% of total arable land.

  4. The fourth best university in Ethiopia is Hawassa University which was established in Hawassa in April 2000. Three southern Ethiopian colleges merged to form the university: Awassa College of Agriculture, Wondogenet College of Forestry, and Dilla College of Teacher Education and Health Sciences.


    The goal of Hawassa University is to promote knowledge, improve technology creation and transfer, foster successful entrepreneurship, and instill a responsible and democratic attitude through training, research, and public services, contributing to the growth of the nation. Since then, the university has grown in size by adding new schools, institutes and departments, programs, and research facilities.


    Hawassa University is currently expanding to increase its intake capacity. As part of this, the University got 61 hectares of land from the Yirgalem Town Administration and has begun building structures to expand existing programs and add new ones.


    Hawassa University is now a comprehensive university with various academic departments that provide all-around education, research, training, and community service.

  5. Bahir Dar University is Ethiopia's fifth-best university. It was established by the amalgamation of two earlier higher education institutions, the Bahir Dar Polytechnic and the Bahir Dar Teachers' College.


    The Bahir Dar Polytechnic Institute, which has now expanded into Technology and Textile institutes, was established in 1963 as a consequence of technological collaboration between the Soviet Union and the Imperial Government of Ethiopia. The institute was a national leader in technician production.


    The Bahir Dar Teachers' College, formerly known as the Academy of Pedagogy, was established in 1972 as a result of a tripartite agreement between the Imperial Government of Ethiopia, UNESCO, and UNDP, and began operations the following year under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Fine Arts.


    The ultimate purpose of the institution was to educate multifunctional primary education professionals capable of applying primary education to rural life and development. Its specific targets include teacher trainers, supervisors, educational leaders, adult education organizers, and community development agents.

  6. Next on this list is The University of Gondar which is located in Ethiopia's ancient town of Gondar. It is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions.


    The University of Gondar was founded in 1954 as a Public Health College and Training Center by the Imperial Ethiopian government, WHO, the United States Operation Mission in Ethiopia, and UNICEF (PHC & TC). The PHC & TC quickly established itself as a pioneer center for public health practice, serving as a vital supply of Ethiopian health professionals in response to the pressing health demands of the 1940s and 1950s. It is still Ethiopia's oldest medical school.


    As a result of the rapid development of the higher education market, it was relaunched as a full-fledged university in 2004.

    The University of Gondar is a forerunner in the country's industry transformational dynamics. Since its beginning 60 years ago, the University has established a strong foundation for community service by producing great graduates and offering services in health care, environmental protection and rural development, computational sciences, and engineering.

Haramaya University, formerly known as Alemaya University, was established in 1954 on the initiative of Emperor Haile Selassie to modernize Ethiopian agriculture in particular and education in general through the establishment of an agricultural college and training programs. The institution was established in its current location at the request of the Emperor.

    Until 1963, Oklahoma State University was given the authority to build and manage the university. In terms of study disciplines and facilities, the university has expanded substantially in recent years.

  8. Arba Minch University is one of the most famous and also is the eighth-best university in Ethiopia. It is located in Ethiopia's southern region. The University was founded in 1986 as the Arba Minch Water Technology Institute (AWTI), and it is still considered a water technology center of excellence in Eastern Africa.


    Arba Minch Institute of Technology, College of Agriculture, College of Business and Economics, College of Natural Sciences, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, and College of Social Sciences and Humanities are all part of Arba Minch University, which was formed in June 2004.

  9. Adama Science and Technology University includes campuses in the towns of Adama, Asella, and Debre Zeyit, as well as Addis Abeba (Winget campus). The Nazareth Technical College (NTC) was formed in 1993 and was later renamed Nazareth College of Technical Teacher Education (NCTTE) until 2003, specializing in the training of technical teachers.

    The same school was raised to the university level in 2006, creating Adama University (AU). After five years, the university was renamed Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU).


    Adama Science and Technology University is currently divided into two towns: Adama, which acts as the main campus, and Asella, which contains the Schools of Agriculture and Health Sciences, respectively.


    Beginning in 2011, the institution embarked on a new phase of development fit for the country's context. It has reorganized its schools and is currently constructing new institutions to supplement the existing ones to boost educational quality.

    The number of academic institutions has now risen to seven, with a separate school established to handle all postgraduate degrees.

  10. Debre Markos University (DMU) is a research university that is open to the public. DMU lies in a region blessed with ideal weather and abundant natural resources, such as the Choke Mountains water-shade, which contains six separate agro-ecology zones within a 50 km (31 mi) radius and is the source of multiple Nile tributaries, and the Upper Blue Nile Gorge.


    Debre Markos University was established in January 2005. DMU began the teaching-learning process two years later with 760 regular students, 53 academic and 34 support personnel, and 21 contract employees, and the name Debre Markos University was formally revealed.


    Debre Markos University presently has 51 undergraduate programs, 47 postgraduate programs, and two Ph.D. programs available in regular, continuing, and distance education. These programs are available at three campuses: the Debre Markos main campus, the Burie campus in Burie, and the Bichena campus in Bichena.


    The university currently has three campuses, five colleges, two schools, and three institutes.
