Trinity College is the University of Dublin's lone constituent college, a research university in Dublin, Ireland. The college was founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I as "the mother of a university" in the style of the collegiate universities of Oxford and Cambridge, but unlike these affiliated institutions, only one college was ever established; as a result, the terms "Trinity College" and "University of Dublin" are often used interchangeably.

Trinity College Dublin is Ireland's most prestigious university, partly due to its historical significance. It is often regarded as one of Europe's finest universities. Academically, it is divided into three faculties, each with 23 schools offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree and diploma programs. The admissions process is solely based on academic performance, with the college having a reputation for excellence in law, literature, and the humanities. University College Dublin is a member of the National University of Ireland and a public research university in Dublin, Ireland. It is Ireland's largest university, with 33,284 students, and one of the country's top universities. Among UCD's alumni and present and previous personnel are five Nobel Laureates.

UCD is descended from an institution founded in 1854 as the Catholic University of Ireland, which opened on the Feast of Saint Malachy with John Henry Newman as its first rector; it was re-formed in 1880 and chartered in 1908. The constituent university was renamed "National University of Ireland, Dublin" by the Universities Act of 1997, and the institution was renamed "University College Dublin – National University of Ireland, Dublin" by a ministerial decree in 1998.

Originally established on St Stephen's Green in Dublin's city center, all faculties have subsequently moved to Belfield, a 133-hectare campus four kilometers south of the city center. The National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway) is an Irish public research university based in Galway. It is one of Ireland's best universities. The university was founded in 1845 as "Queen's College Galway" and until 1997, it was known as "University College Galway" (UCG).

The Coimbra Group, a network of 40 long-established European universities, includes NUI Galway. NUI Galway is home to a number of important research institutes. The NUI Galway Designated Research Institutes are distinguished by significant interdisciplinary and high-quality research activity, as well as extensive national and international collaboration. NUI Galway is home to six designated Research Institutes.

Galway University Foundation was founded in 1998 with the goal of raising funds for NUI Galway from private persons and institutions. University College Cork (UCC) is a constituent university of the National University of Ireland in Cork, Ireland.

The institution began as one of three Queen's Colleges in Belfast, Cork, and Galway in 1845. Under the Irish Universities Act of 1908, it was renamed University College, Cork. The university was designated National University of Ireland, Cork by the Universities Act of 1997, and by a Ministerial Order of 1998, it was renamed University College Cork – National University of Ireland, Cork, however it is still virtually widely known as University College Cork.

The provisions of an act enabling Queen Victoria to endow new colleges for the "Advancement of Learning in Ireland" led to the establishment of Queen's College, Cork. On December 30, 1845, the three colleges of Belfast, Cork, and Galway were incorporated under the provisions of this statute. Medicine, Arts, and Law were the three initial faculties when the college started in 1849 with 23 professors and 181 students. The college became part of the Queen's University of Ireland a year later.

Dublin City University is one of the best universities in Ireland. This Irish university is located on Dublin's northside. It was founded in 1975 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin, and began enrolling students in 1980. In September 1989, it was upgraded to university status (together with the NIHE Limerick, now the University of Limerick) by statute. The Church of Ireland College of Education, All Hallows College, Mater Dei Institute of Education, and St Patrick's College were all merged into DCU in September 2016.

The institution will have 17,400 students and nearly 80,000 alumni by 2020. DCU Connected, the university's online distance education program, has roughly 1,200 students enrolled. Limerick University is a public research university located in Limerick, Ireland. The National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, was founded in 1972 and became a university in 1989, thanks to the University of Limerick Act 1989. It was the first university created in Ireland after the country gained independence in 1922, with Dublin City University following suit later that year.

The University of Limerick's campus is located at Plassey, County Limerick, on a 137.5-hectare plot with 46 hectares on the north bank and 91.5 hectares on the south bank, 5 kilometers from the city center. It includes about 11,000 full-time undergraduate students and 1,500 part-time students, including over 2,400 international students. At the university, there are around 800 research postgraduates and 1,300 postgraduate students enrolled. Its co-operative education program, which was Ireland's first, provides students with an eight-month work experience as part of their degree.

Maynooth University, often known as the National University of Ireland, is a constituent university of the National University of Ireland in Maynooth, County Kildare, Ireland. It was Ireland's newest university until Technological University Dublin was launched in 2019, as it was established by the Universities Act, 1997 from the secular faculties of the now-separate St Patrick's College, Maynooth, which was founded in 1795. Maynooth is also Ireland's lone university town, with all other universities located in cities.

The institution is made up of two connected campuses: an older southern site with 19th-century buildings that are shared with St Patrick's College, and a modern northern campus that spans around 100 acres and is separated by a public road. It is Ireland's smallest, yet fastest expanding, university, with over 13,000 students and over 900 staff from over 20 different countries.

The main campus of the institution is located on the main road connecting Maynooth and Kilcock. There are two campuses: North Campus and South Campus. Until mid-2011, the campuses were joined by a footbridge that bridged the road. Due to the construction of a library extension on the South Campus, the footbridge was decommissioned. The Technological University Dublin, or TU Dublin, is Ireland's first technological university, founded on January 1, 2019, and with a history dating back to 1887 through the amalgamated Dublin Institute of Technology, which evolved from the City of Dublin Technical Schools, Ireland's first technical education institution. With a student population of 28,500, it is Ireland's second-largest third-level college.

The university was created by combining the functions and operations of three existing institutes of technology in the Dublin area: Dublin Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown, and Institute of Technology, Tallaght. It is Ireland's eighth university and the fourth in Dublin County. The institution promotes an entrepreneurial mindset and an industry-focused strategy, with considerable research and teaching partnership with the industry. Grangegorman is the flagship campus, with two other long-term campuses in Tallaght and Blanchardstown, as well as historic buildings on Bolton Street and Aungier Street. The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) is a medical professional and educational institution, as well as Ireland's first private university, RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences. It was founded in 1784 as Ireland's national body for surgical medicine, with responsibility for training oversight, and as of 2021, it provides a broad variety of medical education in different nations.

The main campus of RCSI, which includes schools of medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and nursing, is located on St. Stephen's Green and York Street in central Dublin.
