The University of Sfax is a university located in Sfaxand and among the Best Universities in Tunisia. It began as the University of the South in 1986 and has now expanded to include all academic institutions in the South. With the founding of the University of Gabes in 2003 and the University of Gafsa in 2004, it is separated into three universities, including the current University of Sfax. In 2008–2009, the University of Sfax had 43,473 students. Twenty-one higher education institutions, five research faculties, three colleges, twelve institutes, and a research center hosted the students.

The University of Monastir (UM) is a Tunisian interdisciplinary university in Monastir, Tunisia, having its own financial and administrative autonomy. It was established in 2004 as a result of the reform of the university higher education system, and it is divided into five faculties, two graduate schools, and nine institutes.
Its principal tasks are broadly related to higher education, learning, and research, with the goal of decentralizing services, overseeing, and increasing the higher education system's profitability.

The Institution of Sousse is a Tunisian public university located in Sousse. The University of Sousse was founded in 2004 as a part of the University of the Center, which was founded in 1991 as a result of the merger of the University of Monastir and the University of Sousse. In 30 schools, the University of the Center had risen fast from 45,000 students in 2001-2002 to nearly 60,000 students in 2003–2004. Monastir, Kairouan, and Gafsa all got new universities in 2004.
