Saint Kitts and Nevis is a twin-island republic sandwiched between the Atlantic and Caribbean oceans. It is well-known for its cloud-covered mountains and ... read more...

  1. Mount Liamuiga is a stratovolcano that rises 3,792 feet (1,156 meters) above sea level on Saint Kitts' western coast. The mountain is the highest point on Saint Kitts, in the Saint Kitts and Nevis Federation, and in the entire British Leeward Islands, as well as one of the tallest peaks in the eastern Caribbean archipelago. The summit is capped with a 0.6-mile (1-kilometer) wide summit crater that once held a tiny crater lake. The crater lake had reformed as of 2006. The volcano's latest confirmed eruptions were over 1,800 years ago, and rumors of probable eruptions in 1692 and 1843 are deemed suspect.

Mount Misery was the previous name for Mount Liamuiga. The renaming took place on September 19, 1983, the anniversary of St. Kitts' independence. Many older residents, though, still refer to it as Mount Misery. Liamuiga is taken from the Kalinago name for St. Kitts' entire island, which means "fertile land."

Up to 1,500 feet (460 meters) in elevation, the mountain sides are covered in farms and small communities, after which luxuriant tropical rainforests wrap the slopes until cloud forest takes over at 3,000 feet (900 m). Many tours and guided treks to the peak's summit and surrounding rainforests are offered, with most departing from Belmont Estate in St. Paul's. The views from the peak are spectacular, with panoramic views of the entire island, the gorgeous Caribbean Sea, and the neighboring islands of Saba, Sint Eustatius, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Martin, Antigua, and Nevis.

Location: on the west side of the island of Saint Kitts

  2. Nevis Peak is a possibly active volcano on the island of Nevis in the West Indies, which is part of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The stratovolcano reaches a height of 985 meters (3,232 feet) and is the island's highest peak. Although there have been no eruptions since prehistory, active fumaroles and hot springs can be seen on the island's coastal slopes, indicating low-level volcanic activity.

Farming is impossible on the steeper slopes of Nevis Peak. In the mountain, there is dry forest, humid forest, and rain forest at the lower levels of the mountain, with rain forest above that. There is a cloud forest, a montane habitat, near the top of the peak, which is covered in cloud most of the time.

The trek to the top of the peak and back is possible, but the path contains some difficult aspects. Hikers must be physically fit to finish this route, and it is vital to travel with a competent guide for safety reasons. On clear days, the top of the mountain offers breathtaking views over not only Nevis, but also the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the several surrounding islands of the Leeward Island chain.

Birds such as the red-necked pigeon and the bridled quail-dove, as well as many battalions of the African green vervet monkey, which was introduced in the past and has grown naturalized, are among the fauna of the mountain. Nevis Peak's flora includes five different types of tree ferns, several Heliconia species, and a variety of other plants.

It is 250 meters lower than Mount Liamuiga, which is the highest point on the island of Saint Kitts with a height of 1,156 meters (3792 ft), in the federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and in the British Leeward Islands as a whole, as well as one of the tallest peaks in the eastern Caribbean archipelago. The mountain is lower than Verchild's Mountain, which lies 4.3 kilometers to the northwest and lies close to the centre of the island, and rises to a height of 900 m (2953 ft), both on the island of Saint Kitts.
