Hanoi University of Science and Technology
Hanoi University of Science and Technology, founded in 1956, is Vietnam's oldest and largest technical university. It was built in buildings previously used by Indochina (now Vietnam National) University, gave rise to the Universities of Civil Engineering and Mining and Geology, and dispatched faculty to reconstruct Ho Chi Minh City University of Science and Technology when the Vietnam War ended.
Five of its presidents have also served as education and/or science ministers or deputy ministers. Although it was renamed Hanoi University of Science and Technology in English in 2010, it has preserved its Vietnamese name of Dai hoc Bach khoa Ha Noi (HUT) as well as the French Institut Polytechnique de Hanoi.
It declares a "commitment to human development, high-quality workforce training, scientific research, technological innovation, and knowledge transfer that serves our country and global society," describing itself as "a multidisciplinary research university in which scientific research is the main force."
Admission is extremely hard, with 33,000 applicants competing for 6,680 spots in June 2019. The Elitech scheme, which incorporates the 5-year Excellent Engineer Training Programmes resulting in a French CTI qualification, benefits the most talented students.
Food technology, dynamic engineering, biotechnology, and biological sciences are among the eight multidisciplinary research strengths highlighted by the Hanoi University of Science and Technology. It has eight National Key Laboratories and was placed second in Vietnam's Nature index for 2018-9.
