Vietnam National University, Hanoi
Vietnam National University, Hanoi, established in 1906, is a direct descendent of the colonial-era Universite de Indochine.
It is "one of two main interdisciplinary and multisectoral institutions, tasked with creating highly competent human resources for the rest of the country," together with Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City. They are run differently than the rest of Vietnam's higher education system, reporting directly to the prime minister rather than the education minister, and have more autonomy.
With the merging of the University of Hanoi, the College of Foreign Languages, and the Hanoi National Union of Education in 1993, Vietnam National University, Hanoi took on its current name and shape. It is organized into 12 universities, as well as two specialized schools for students with remarkable abilities in languages and natural sciences.
The university's two training and research centers are dedicated to national defense and security, as well as physical education and sports. At the 2019 Academic Olympiad, high school students received medals in math, biology, and physics. The Vietnam National University, Hanoi has six campuses, the largest of which is located in Xuan Thuy.
