Operation Reach Out
Founded in 1987 by Modene Howie, Ben Strickland, and James Sessoms, Operation Reach-Out, Inc., is a 501 Christian nonprofit located in Monroe, North Carolina, that strives to provide spiritual and physical help and hope to those in the community with the encouraging and loving heart of Christ and without judgment or cynicism.
Operation Reach-Out aims to glorify God through our daily interactions with those who come through the doors with any need. They seek to share the gospel through our daily lunch and Bible study; offer financial support, emergency shelter, household goods, and food assistance for those in crisis; and provide material and educational support for those seeking employment. As needed, they will accomplish their goals through strong partnerships with area churches and other Union County ministries and organizations.
The Operation Reach Out app has two components, which you can access via the two options on the homepage. Each section has several short (10-30 second) videos of military personnel speaking about suicide. The difference between the two components is that videos in the “I’m concerned about myself” section are aimed directly at the user, whereas videos in the “I’m concerned about someone else” department advise friends, family members, or colleagues on how to help someone in need.
In the ‘Help Center’ section of the Operation Reach Out app, users can fill in the names and numbers of people they should reach out to in a crisis. The “Resources” section lists websites users can refer to, e.g., Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Centers of Disease Control, Military Family. The “Activities” section suggests activities that users can do with other people, e.g., “Join an online dating service” “Get involved in your local block or neighborhood association.” Users can rate each activity by giving a thumbs up or thumbs down; those assigned a thumbs down will not appear again. Users are encouraged to do one action every day.
