  5. Breathe2Relax is a mobile-based app intended to teach diaphragmatic breathing as a stress management skill. Diaphragmatic breathing is marked by the expansion of the abdomen rather than the chest when breathing. The app visually guides the user and provides audio instructions on practicing the breathing technique to reduce stress levels.

Users can also view a video demonstration before beginning the exercise. Breathe2Relax allows users to set the pace of the breathing exercise at a comfortable rate, set the pace for inhaling and exhaling, and change the number of practice breathing cycles. Before and after each practice session, the app prompts users to record their stress levels on a visual scale by simply swiping a small bar to the left or the right. Graphs show users' changes in their self-reported stress levels. The developers encourage users to practice diaphragmatic breathing regularly during highly stressful situations. Additional features include reading material and videos on diaphragmatic breathing, the biology of stress, the effects of stress on the body, and wellness tips.

  6. Founded in 1987 by Modene Howie, Ben Strickland, and James Sessoms, Operation Reach-Out, Inc., is a 501 Christian nonprofit located in Monroe, North Carolina, that strives to provide spiritual and physical help and hope to those in the community with the encouraging and loving heart of Christ and without judgment or cynicism.

    Operation Reach-Out
aims to glorify God through our daily interactions with those who come through the doors with any need. They seek to share the gospel through our daily lunch and Bible study; offer financial support, emergency shelter, household goods, and food assistance for those in crisis; and provide material and educational support for those seeking employment. As needed, they will accomplish their goals through strong partnerships with area churches and other Union County ministries and organizations.

The Operation Reach Out app has two components, which you can access via the two options on the homepage. Each section has several short (10-30 second) videos of military personnel speaking about suicide. The difference between the two components is that videos in the “I’m concerned about myself” section are aimed directly at the user, whereas videos in the “I’m concerned about someone else” department advise friends, family members, or colleagues on how to help someone in need.

In the ‘Help Center’ section of the Operation Reach Out app, users can fill in the names and numbers of people they should reach out to in a crisis. The “Resources” section lists websites users can refer to, e.g., Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Centers of Disease Control, Military Family. The “Activities” section suggests activities that users can do with other people, e.g., “Join an online dating service” “Get involved in your local block or neighborhood association.” Users can rate each activity by giving a thumbs up or thumbs down; those assigned a thumbs down will not appear again. Users are encouraged to do one action every day.

  9. Smartphone apps are a convenient, readily accessible tool for people experiencing anxiety who want quick guidance without the need for lengthy searching or taxing cognitive tasks. The Self Help for Anxiety Management (SAM) app is ideal in the heat of the moment. Developed by a university team, the content is accurate and based on current psychological models.

SAM is the most comprehensive anxiety app. It offers tools for assistance with anxiety in the immediate moment, such as breathing, mindful observing of pictures, and redirecting your focus, all of which are valuable techniques. Additionally, the methods are simple, straightforward, directive, and perhaps most appealing because they are uniquely interactive. You can, for example, uncover pieces of a picture at a time by dragging your finger across the screen. Slightly longer-term tools are also offered, such as increasing awareness of unhelpful thinking styles, questioning your thoughts, and self-care, among many more.

Another excellent feature of SAM is a brief four-part visual analog scale for rating your anxiety and tension, worrying thoughts, unpleasant physical sensations, and avoidance. The anxiety tracker provides a visual summary of your concern over time, enabling ongoing monitoring - an essential component of change.

Numerous additional features add to this app’s appeal, including the ability to save favorite tools to your anxiety toolkit for ease of access later. Combined with the “things that make me anxious” section, this has some of the makings of a mini staying-well-plan. The SAM app also has a social cloud area where users can interact. As with any form of social media, this can have its benefits and pitfalls, but you can choose whether to enter this area or not.

  10. In October 2015 they launched a crowdfunding campaign on Pozible to fund the development of MoodMission. They received an amazing response when 207 amazing pledgers showed their support for their app by helping us reach their target of $20,000. Since then they have been hard at work building and improving the app with the help of Spark Digital, and on the 17th of August, 2016, our work paid off when MoodMission was launched on the iOS App Store.

Soon after the iOS release, they heard the calls from so many folks desperate for MoodMission to expand to Android. In fact, a post on Imgur received over 300,000 views, and thousands asked for an Android version. A crowdfunding campaign was successful in raising funds for developing an Android version, which was released with great excitement in early 2017.

MoodMission is an app meant to help people dealing with stress, anxiety, or depression. The app recommends “missions” based on how the user is feeling. Monash University is researching the app and how it affects users. It helps them gather data; users are asked to complete six surveys (that take about five minutes each) before unlocking the app. Survey questions cover topics such as emotions and general well-being.

Select how you’re feeling (anxious, depressed, or neither), and then identify how distressing your emotions are. Choose from a list of options to best determine the problem you’re experiencing, such as “I can’t stop thinking about something” or “I can’t quite put my finger on it.”

Based on your responses, MoodMission suggests five different missions. Each mission contains objections and an explanation of how the activity may help. After completing the task, you can then choose to accept an assignment rate how distressed you feel. A mission log shows all completed missions, and you’ll be assigned ranks as you progress through the app. The goal is to identify simple but effective strategies for boosting your mood.
